The Nepal Context — An Honest Conversation About Price

Before diving into the specs, Nepal buyers deserve a frank conversation about what happened here. The MacBook Air M4 launched in Nepal at Rs. 1,52,500 for the 16GB/256GB base model — widely considered the best-value MacBook Apple had ever brought to Nepal. Last year’s 16GB/512GB M4 variant was available for Rs. 1,89,000.

Now the M5 arrives with the same 16GB/512GB configuration at Rs. 2,10,500 — a jump of Rs. 21,500 over the equivalent M4 configuration from last year. And critically, Apple has discontinued the M4 Air entirely. It is no longer available from authorised Nepal dealers. Buyers no longer have the choice of dropping down to the M4 for a more accessible price. The selection is now the MacBook Neo at Rs. 86,699, or the M5 Air at Rs. 2,10,500 — with nothing in between.

Here is the silver lining: when you factor in storage, the M5 is actually better value than the M4 was. Apple previously charged an additional $200 to upgrade the M4 Air from 256GB to 512GB. The M5 starts with 512GB standard — and costs only $100 more globally than the equivalent M4 model. MacRumors put it directly: the M5 effectively costs $100 less than a comparably configured M4 model would have at launch. In Nepal, the math is slightly less generous due to import markups, but the principle holds.

Design — Identical to M2. That Is Still Fine.

Apple has not touched the design of the MacBook Air since the M2 generation launched in 2022. The M5 Air is visually indistinguishable from the M2, M3, and M4 models. Same flat-top unibody aluminium chassis. Same notch. Same MagSafe port on the left, two Thunderbolt 4 ports on the left side only, headphone jack on the right. The Magic Keyboard with Touch ID returns unchanged. The Force Touch trackpad remains the best trackpad on any laptop anywhere.

If this sounds like a criticism, it is not. The MacBook Air design that Apple locked in with the M2 is still the best thin-and-light laptop design on the planet. At 1.24 kg for the 13-inch and 1.51 kg for the 15-inch, both remain genuinely pocketable for a laptop and absurdly light for the performance they deliver.

Sky Blue is the new addition for M5 — a soft, muted steel-blue that is subtle in most lights but catches nicely in good lighting. It replaces Starlight Pink from the M4 lineup and will almost certainly be the most popular colour in Nepal.

CPU — Modest But Meaningful

The M5 delivers 15% faster multithreaded CPU performance over the M4, scoring 17,073 in Geekbench 6 multi-core versus the M4’s 14,731. In real-world terms for most users — browsing, writing, spreadsheets, Zoom calls — you will not notice the difference. The M4 was already faster than virtually any daily workflow demands. But cumulative generational gains matter over a machine’s lifespan. The M5 is notably faster than the M2 (57%) and M1 (75%) — which matters if you are upgrading from an older Mac.

GPU — The More Exciting Upgrade

The GPU improvement is more significant: 30% faster GPU performance over the M4. The Geekbench Metal GPU score jumps from approximately 55,000 on the M4 to around 76,000 on the M5 — a meaningful step that benefits anyone doing photo editing, video work, 3D rendering, or gaming via Apple Arcade or CrossOver. The third-generation ray-tracing engine and second-generation dynamic caching further improve graphics efficiency.

AI — The Biggest Leap of All

This is where the M5 makes its most dramatic statement. By placing a Neural Accelerator in every GPU core — an architectural first for the MacBook Air — the M5 delivers 4× faster AI performance than the M4 and 9.5× faster than the M1. Apple tested this with real applications: Topaz Video AI enhancement is 1.9× faster than M4, Blender 3D rendering is 1.5× faster, Affinity photo editing is 1.5× faster.

The SSD Upgrade — Unexpectedly the Most Exciting Thing

The Gen 4 SSD in the M5 Air is genuinely startling. Independent testing found SSD read speed improvements of 125% and write speed improvements of 219% over the M4 Air’s Gen 3 SSD. Apple’s claim of “twice as fast” turned out to be an understatement on writes. A real-world test copying a 29GB Final Cut Pro project from an external SSD to the M5 was 30% faster than on the M4 — and compression of that same project was 13% faster.

For context: fast SSD storage means faster app launches, faster Time Machine backups, faster video scrubbing, and faster large file transfers. For Nepal’s video creators, photographers, and developers, this improvement is tangible in daily work. The maximum configurable storage is now 4TB — also a first for the MacBook Air lineup.

Connectivity — Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 Change the Daily Experience

The M5 Air introduces Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) and Bluetooth 6 via Apple’s in-house N1 wireless chip — the same chip found in the M5 Pro MacBook Pro. Wi-Fi 7 delivers theoretical speeds up to 46 Gbps and significantly reduced latency compared to Wi-Fi 6E. Even if Nepal’s public Wi-Fi infrastructure has not caught up to Wi-Fi 7 speeds yet, home routers supporting Wi-Fi 7 are increasingly available — and this laptop will still be relevant when that transition completes.

The port selection is unchanged: MagSafe 3, two Thunderbolt 4 ports (both on the left side), and a 3.5mm headphone jack. For users who need ports on both sides of the laptop, this remains a frustration. An external hub is practically essential for desk setups.

Battery and Charging — Finally a Better Charger in the Box

The 13-inch carries a 53.8Wh battery and the 15-inch has a 66.5Wh battery. Apple claims up to 18 hours of video streaming for both models — identical to the M4. Real-world battery life in mixed use (browsing, writing, video calls, light editing) typically lands between 10–14 hours, which comfortably covers a full Nepali working day without reaching for a charger.

The charger situation finally improves. Apple now includes a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter — up from the 30W adapter in the M4 Air box — with a maximum output of 60W. The laptop also supports 70W fast charging, which can take you from 0 to 50% in just 30 minutes, but you need to buy the 70W adapter separately. One minor annoyance noted by reviewers: the new adapter loses the dual USB-C port design of the previous dual-port 35W adapter, returning to single-port only.

Display — Still Excellent, Still 60Hz, Still No OLED

The Liquid Retina IPS display is unchanged from previous generations. The 13-inch runs at 2560 × 1664 pixels and the 15-inch at 2880 × 1864 pixels — both at the same 224 PPI pixel density. Peak brightness is 500 nits. Colors are accurate and text is crisp. For everyday work, streaming, and photo editing, this display is excellent.

The limitations are real but unchanged: still 60Hz — no ProMotion. Still IPS LCD — no OLED. If you have used the ProMotion display on an M4 iPad Pro or a MacBook Pro, returning to 60Hz is noticeable in fast scrolling. OLED for the MacBook Air is expected — but not before 2027 at the earliest. For now, these are the same trade-offs Nepal buyers have always made for the Air’s price and fanless design.
