The Hyundai Ioniq 6 Will have 610+ KMs Driving Range

Hyundai Motor introduced the eagerly awaited IONIQ 6 along with advanced technologies, personalized space and features, and an extended range redefining electric mobility boundaries. IONIQ 6 delivers an estimated all-electric range of over 610 km, according to Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) standard, as well as ultra-fast, 400-V/800-V multi-charging capability by Hyundai’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP).

Inspired by Hyundai’s Prophecy EV Concept, Ioniq 6 is characterized by clean, simple lines and a pure aerodynamic form that Hyundai designers describe as Emotional Efficiency. Like the award-winning Ioniq 5 before it, Ioniq 6 implements the Hyundai Look design strategy that gives each model a unique appearance.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 Overview:

It has a wheelbase that is 116.1 inches, 2.0 inches shorter than the Ioniq 5’s, but that also made it possible to draw out its 191.1-inch body, which is 8.6 inches longer than the Ioniq 5’s. This gave it a sleek shape with a distinctively tapered “boat tail” rear end and a very low 0.21 coefficient of drag.

However, the lowered roofline also has the additional benefit of dramatically reducing the Ioniq 6’s cross-sectional area, which makes its low drag coefficient (Cd) much more significant because total drag is a function of Cd multiplied by cross-sectional area.

Design

The Ioniq 6 gets a streamlined silhouette and is more aerodynamically designed than the boxy Ioniq 5. The electric sedan is shorter than the Ioniq 5 but gets a longer body and wheelbase. Furthermore, the new EV gets a lowered roofline and tapered ‘boat tail’ rear end, which helps lower the vehicle’s drag coefficient to 0.21. The sedan stands on either 18- or 20-inch alloy wheels.

For lighting, the sedan gets parametric pixel lights at both ends. The headlamps feature an Intelligent Front-lighting System (IFS) that detects approaching vehicles and prevents high-beam effects for approaching drivers. On the rear, the vehicle gets a horizontal pixel light bar across the rear, along with a transparent high-mounted stop-lamp on the spoiler.

Exterior and Interior

The sides of the EV feature flush door handles and cameras in place of traditional wing mirrors. Towards the rear, the electric sedan gets pixel-style LED tail lights, a ducktail rear spoiler, and a curved shoulder line, similar to the concept.

Measuring 4,855mm in length, 1,880mm in width, and 1,495mm in height, and with a wheelbase of 2,950mm, the Ioniq 6 is a close match in size to the Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, and BMW i4.

On the inside, the Ioniq 6 features a flat center console that’s seen on other EV products by the brand and the Genesis GV60 sold overseas. The minimalist dashboard houses a pair of dual 12-inch touchscreens and a two-spoke steering wheel.

Powertrain

The Ioniq 6 comes with two battery options–a 53 kWh (standard) and a  77.4 kWh (long range)–and two motor options. The long-range model is offered either with a rear-wheel drive system or an all-wheel drive system, and the standard model is rear-wheel drive only.

For charging, the longer-range model can be charged from 10-80% within 18 minutes via a 350 kW DC fast charger; via a 50 kW fast charger, it takes 66 minutes. On a full charge, this model can provide a maximum range of 610 km, depending on the drivetrain and wheel options.

Similarly, the standard model (with an  800V battery system) takes the same amount of time to go from 10-80% via a 350 kW DC fast charger, and in only five minutes of charging, the EV provides an approximate range of 92 km. Furthermore, the 50 kW DC fast charger charges the EV (10-80%) in 58 minutes. The RWD model, equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, provides a range of 380 km on a single charge.

Features

The premium electric sedan comes with a plethora of convenience features such as dual-color ambient lighting, speed-sync lighting, voice recognition, three driving modes (Normal, Eco, and Sport), a Digital Side Mirror (DSM) integrated into a dashboard, column-type shift-by-wire transmission, head-up display, wireless charging, Bluetooth multi-connection, five-USB ports, and 360-degree surround view monitor.
